The number of Covid-19 cases hit highest since last year in Fukushima plant

Covid-19 is increasingly spreading among the decommissioning workers in the Fukushima nuclear plant. Since three workers were confirmed to be infected in December in 2020, the average cases per month have been less than 10 until June in 2021. However, 14 workers were newly infected in July and already 48 workers, including Tepco employees and the collaborating company workers, have tested positive as of the 13th of August, 2021.
Currently about 4,000 people are involved in the decommissioning process in the Fukushima nuclear plant daily. The infection is estimated to be spreading inside the working teams.
