Peace Pipes Full of Pot "OK" Says Department of Justice

On Thursday the U.S Justice Department gave the green-light for pot production on Tribal lands. Native-American Tribes can grow and sell marijuana because they are sovereign nations. They do however, have to follow the same rules Feds have applied to legal cannabis States.

Most Tribes are leary of introducing pot on their lands and in their business models. The Associated Press (AP) reports,

Oregon U.S. Attorney Amanda Marshall said the policy addresses questions raised by tribes about how legalization of pot in states like Oregon, Washington and Colorado would apply to Indian lands.

“That’s been the primary message tribes are getting to us as U.S. attorneys,” Marshall said from Portland. “What will the U.S. as federal partners do to assist tribes in protecting our children and families, our tribal businesses, our tribal housing? How will you help us combat marijuana abuse in Indian Country when states are no longer there to partner with us?”

Like casinos, cannabis could be a huge financial boon to Tribes across the country however, many Tibal members, just like many non-tribal members, still look at marijuana as a harmful “drug”. Several Tribes have already or ar in the processes of outright banning pot from their lands so the new opportunity posses myriad questions.
