‘Otherworldly’ shark caught off La Paz, Mexico, baffles scientists

The recent discovery in Mexico of a bizarre-looking shark fetus that boasts what appears to be a single eye in the center of its head has created a stir among scientists, and is sure to pique the interest of anyone who catches a glimpse of the images.

The three-foot-long fetus was said to have been removed from the body of a large

bull shark captured by commercial fishermen in the Sea of Cortez beyond La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur.

A brief story about the shark, under the headline “Freak Shark Puzzles Scientists,” was posted Saturday on the Pisces Sportfishing blog.

Pete Thomas Outdoors on Monday shared the top right image with two well-known shark experts in California. Both were skeptical at first, suggesting it must be some kind of hoax.

One of them jokingly identified the species as a “Cycloptomus” because of a perfectly centered single eye — eerily human in appearance — located just above the mouth.

But renowned shark expert Felipe Galvan has seen the shark and has even produced a paper on the discovery, which is under scientific review.
“When I have an answer from the journal I will give you more information,” he said Monday night via email.

Meanwhile, the story is beginning to circulate on various shark-related websites. A Monday post on the

Shark Diver blog states, “The eye is the freaky part and we might have called “Faux Shark” on this one until word that renown shark scientist Dr. Felipe Galvan had seen, studied, and produced an initial paper on this otherworldly animal.”

Bull sharks are some of the most aggressive and accounting for many attacks on humans, we have had attacks on people in the waters here where I live, the last causing the death of a 13 year old girl playing in the waters of Daytona Beach area. If these sharks are out there with the one eye cyclopes then we seem to have new predator One EYED MONSTER in the waters with us !
