Hidden Fees in Cell Phone Charges Taken to FTC

Have you noticed small little fees in your phone bill that you can’t account for?
If so, you may be getting swindled. According to the Federal Trade Commission, there has been a slew of fees being added to people’s local and cell phone bills.
The fees, not appropriated by any phone company, are done by third parties using loopholes.
On Sunday, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer called on the FTC to stop the practice of companies charging people for mysterious fees such as for international phone calls that weren’t actually made by the consumer, “web-hosting” fees, and “third-party calling.”
However, even if you do notice the fees, its very difficult to get the phone companies to reverse the charges, sources say.
The practice is known to some as “cramming,” which came about after regulations were lifted on the phone industry, says Schumer.
WPIX in New York said “The FTC received over 3,000 complaints over the last year regarding unauthorized charges on telephone bills, including landline, mobile wireless, and VoIP services.”
An Electronista report said,
“Cleveland-based law firm Goldman Scarlato & Karon on Friday sued Verizon in a class-action case that accuses it of illegally charging phantom data fees. Filed in a New Jersey federal court, the complaint echoes known allegations that Verizon has been randomly charging customers with regular cellphones $2 on their bills for data they never used. The suit would compensate any Verizon customer that can prove they saw the fees on their bills.”
Indeed, the charges are small, but if added up over several months for tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people, then the income could be huge.
