Lucid CEO shares deep dive into motor in new Tech Talks video

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Lucid CEO, Peter Rawlinson, shared a deep dive into the company’s motors and a comparison with other motors in its latest Tech Talks video. In the video, Rawlinson takes viewers “deep into the heart” of Lucid’s drive unit. Weighing 67 pounds, the motor generates 670 horsepower or 10 horsepower per pound, Rawlinson said.

Around 20 minutes into the video, Rawlinson brings Lucid’s Vice President of Powertrain, Dr. Emad Dlala into the presentation and the two continue the deep dive into the company’s motor. At around 38 minutes into the talk, the two executives analyze the approach of other automakers’ stator design and manufacturing.

Dr. Dlala pointed out that Lucid’s rectangular wire stacking maximizes the copper slot fills and noted that the eight conductors were visible. Moving on from Lucid’s stator, the two look at several other stators from an American EV brand and a German sports car brand (both brands are not mentioned by name.)

The two executives later assess the approach of other manufacturers to rotor design, looking at a rotor with a carbon wrap and the rotor from a German sports car brand. Most likely, the popular American EV brand is Tesla (my assumption) and my guess for the German one is Porsche. I could be wrong on both counts so take my guesses with a few grains of salt.

Last month, Lucid Motors unveiled the new Lucid Air Sapphire EV which has a twin motor rear-drive unit and a single motor front-drive unit. The new variant is expected to deliver over 1,200 horsepower and accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under 2 seconds.
