Tesla Semi completes 500-mile journey weighing in at 81,000 pounds

The Tesla Semi’s first deliveries are drawing closer, and CEO Elon Musk is wasting no time on Twitter promoting the electric vehicle maker’s upcoming Class 8 all-electric truck. Based on Musk’s recent posts, it appears that the Semi is definitely ready to work for its customers, as the Tesla team recently completed a 500-mile journey with the vehicle weighing in at 81,000 pounds. 

“Tesla team just completed a 500-mile drive with a Tesla Semi weighing in at 81,000 lbs!” Musk wrote this weekend. 

Musk’s post was received warmly on Twitter, with electric vehicle advocates sharing their excitement for the feat. The Tesla Semi, after all, is not just one of the company’s most delayed products — it is also one of the ones that received the most doubt. 

While Tesla has proven itself in the consumer vehicle market, the long-haul trucking segment is a completely different animal. This has resulted in some trucking veterans expressing their doubts about the all-electric Class 8 truck. 

Following the Semi’s unveiling, for example, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler Truck AG Martin Daum infamously commented that Tesla’s Class 8 truck and its target specs violate the laws of physics. 

“If Tesla really delivers on this promise, we’ll obviously buy two trucks — one to take apart and one to test because if that happens, something has passed us by. But for now, the same laws of physics apply in Germany and in California,” Daum said. 

Elon Musk acknowledged these reservations during the Q3 2022 earnings call when he and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Zachary Kirkhorn made it a point to highlight that the Tesla Semi’s 500-mile range pertains to the truck when it’s loaded with cargo. Musk also noted that he expects Tesla to aim for a production rate of 50,000 units annually in 2024 for North America. If Tesla is successful, it will make the EV maker one of the largest Class 8 truck makers in the United States.
