Tesla to launch new Performance mode for Model 3 and Y
Tesla appears to be gearing up to launch a new Performance mode for the Model 3 and Model Y, as spotted in code from recent firmware updates.
On Sunday, Tesla code sleuth green the only posted about a “soft performance limit” option for the Model 3 and Y discovered in recent firmware, which the account says are listed as 110kW and 160kW, respectively. The discovery seems to suggest that Tesla is looking to launch a paid upgrade for the software-locked mode, allowing owners to upgrade to access full battery range.

Others have also suggested that the move could be due to regulations in specific markets, such as Singapore, where the automaker recently launched a Model 3 RWD 110 configuration to seemingly accommodate max power output exemptions granted to electric vehicles (EVs) under 110kW.
Still, Tesla has recently hinted at the fact that it may start offering paid performance upgrades for its vehicles.
Earlier this month, Elon Musk alluded to Tesla’s future plans to offer software-locked performance upgrades for the Model Y, after the automaker launched a new base-level Long Range RWD configuration as a replacement for the previous, lower-ranged configuration.
Musk also said that the software upgrade would be priced around $1,500 to $2,000 and would offer an additional 40 to 60 miles of range, bringing some models up to par with the new Long Range Trim.
It’s not entirely clear when Tesla would begin offering the aforementioned “soft performance limit,” though green has been known to spot things before they’re officially made public.
Along with this, green recently noticed what seemed to be a Tesla hands-free voice assistant in code for software update 2024.14.3, According to the post, the assistant is set to be automatically activated using what the hacker called a “wakeword,” meaning that the car would always be listening for that given word.
In January, green detailed some insights into upcoming vehicle features from code found in update 2023.44.30.8, including a “mechanical horn” steering wheel and yoke set, expected to be made available for the Model S and X.
