Ford partners with electric provider for free at-home EV charging

Ford and a Texas retail electric provider are partnering to offer electric vehicle (EV) owners the opportunity to charge at home for free with a new program.

Ford and TXU Energy, a subsidiary of Vistra, have come together to offer the TXU Free EV Miles Program, which gives Ford EV drivers free at-home charging by giving them a credit on their TXU Energy bill for all home energy used for EV charging during free charging hours. This is between 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. on the following day throughout the entire year.

The program is being used as an educational tool to help inform Texans about the perks of owning and driving an EV while incentivizing customers to charge during low-demand hours.

Tesla has done a similar thing in California by encouraging owners to charge during off-peak hours by offering discounts on kWh rates.

80 percent of EV charging occurs at home, and the hours Ford and TXU Energy are offering account for 18 hours, so there should be some true takers for this program. Free charging and free miles are always an advantage, but there are also times when people will need to charge outside of the off-peak hours.

For these instances, Ford and TXU said owners will pay a “simple, fixed rate — the same rate as the rest of their home.”

Bill Crider, senior director of global charging and energy services, said:

“Encouraging our electric vehicle customers to charge at off-peak hours through programs like Free EV Miles helps to save them money while supporting a more sustainable, resilient electrical grid. Ford electric SUVs and trucks already have a lower operating and maintenance cost compared to gas-powered vehicles, and at-home charging offers additional financial perks and future vehicle-to-grid services never before possible, which Ford is committed to leading for our customers.”

There will also be additional perks offered by Ford and TXU Energy, including $100 from Ford and $250 from TXU once enrollment reaches one year.
