Starlink gets license to operate in Sri Lanka
Starlink received a license in Sri Lanka, enabling it to start operations there. According to the Sri Lankan President’s office, the local telecommunications regulator issued a license to SpaceX, permitting it to provide Starlink services in the country.
In June, Sri Lanka’s President Wickremesinghe greenlit Starlink’s launch in the country.
“Starlink’s implementation will be transformative for Sri Lankans, especially those struggling to stay connected with reliable, high-speed internet. This advancement will significantly improve connectivity across the country, which is crucial for inclusion in the digital economy and maintaining communication in remote areas and during natural disasters,” commented Sri Lanka’s President.
In July, Sri Lanka’s parliament passed a new telecommunications bill allowing SpaceX to apply for a license to provide Starlink services. The new bill introduced a new license category. Sri Lanka’s Minister of Technology noted that the new bill was the first time in 28 years that parliament amended its Telecommunications Act.
Earlier this year, Starlink celebrated a new milestone: passing 3 million customers in 99 countries worldwide. Starlink is connecting people worldwide through wars and natural disasters. It is also providing free internet to schools in remote areas.
