The meditations, which are named contemplations start with the usual preparatory prayers, then a series of preludes (three), point of focus (three) and a colloquy to end a one hour or so intense moment of réflexion. I did “the whole works” for a month. I confess to have crawled in a corner once. It was terrifying, but I continued. It is said that one must have a competent spiritual director who has the authority to stop the exercises at any time, but where can one find a spiritual director nowadays?
From this personal spiritual journey, I may tell two things: 1. the Spiritual Exercises are not for everyone. 2. the Spiritual Exercises may be abused as some sort of an addiction. This is what I think the Carme (and spiritual director to St. Teresa of Avila and her nuns) St. John of the Cross referred to as the “spiritual gluttons”.
The Spiritual Exercises, by being (I think mandatory) to all Jesuits, may lead to some explorations towards the occult (Black Magic?) but most certainly they will bring a dark veil of suspicion from the non initiate in meditation.
It is therefore unjust to bring systematic accusations of sorcery upon “the Jesuits”. Never forget the caveat emptor: You may, in the name of Jesus, and by the power of His Most Sacred Blood command the demons, but you never, ever “command otherwise”.

The Spiritual Exercises which was commented above is in need to supplementary clarifications: I imprudently, and without explanations, used the word “meditations” in order to make the distinction with what are “contemplations” (in the Spiritual Exercises). This casual use of mine may inadvertently lead to some disastrous results (to whoever might try at home!). The contemplations are a view of the unseen while remaining in the safety of an enclosed coral. Simply put: the rigid series of prayers and choregraphed mental steps consisting of: preparation; preludes; etc ; up to the ending colloquy: are of an absolute must! otherwise the spirit may become at risk of entering into an out-of-bound territory (of the unseen). The term “coral” may apply also to the classic forms of witchcraft, which has the same effect of protection from the demonic (who are then invoked safely by the sorcerer in view of a “deal” -which may be a curse, or favors, etc). In the Spiritual Exercises, there is no such thing as “invocation”, because Christians have God with them, and so the Christians are in no need of anything outside from their own lot. The Christians have only the holy desire to get closer to God. This is what the Spiritual Exercises are all about: getting closer to the unseen godly while remaining in safety.

The risk of meditation includes: getting lost to never return; getting completely disoriented to the point of entering into states of confusions such as calling evil, goods, and good evil; finally, when returning finding one’s own self being squatted by demons! this is then a case of demonic possession (Transcendental Meditation is a leading cause of demonic possession). It is a futile curiosity to know the reasons. It must be said that the Blessed Virgin, the woman who crushes the serpent with her heal is a master in prayers. … I personally consider the Rosary Prayer consisting of the 153 Hail Mary’s from the Fifteen Mysteries, as fool-proof as a block-chain. This Holy Rosary, in whole or in three separate tercets is universally prayed since Fatima as what is truly the last chance for mankind.
