A 'Social' Conservative's View of Newt's Infidelity

Normally when I start an article I know the point I am trying to make.  After all, that is the entire idea behind writing a blog article, isn’t it?  So when I started thinking about writing an article regarding Newt Gingrich’s marriage problems, I realized I don’t have a particular stance.  I guess that makes it a pretty strange idea to move forward with writing this article, but I’m hoping this will be an opportunity for discussion on the topic.

First of all, I am sure many of my piers would consider me a ‘social’ conservative.  I personally don’t like, or even appreciate the label because I think many people use the term in a condescending way.  Liberals would interpret the term as meaning I dislike or even hate gays and have a narrow-minded, bible thumping point of view on all topics.  Libertarians might use the term as a kind way to say I am wrong on topics like gay marriage and marijuana.  Personally, I would simply call myself a Conservative, with Libertarians and Republicans rounding out the main groups on the ‘right,’ but that would require an extensive post to explain and most likely result in a debate not even related to the topic of this post.  In the end, I do care more about some social issues than I do about fiscal issues.  I do place a major emphasis on my faith in all decisions, including which politicians I support.  Because of that, people would not be wrong in expecting me to have some major thinking to do prior to supporting a candidate who has cheated on their spouse(s).

The first thing that popped into my head when I heard about Newt’s past was Bill Clinton.  You can’t give someone a free pass when you used the same argument against a politician on the other side of the aisle.  I was only between the ages of 10 and 18 when Bill Clinton was President, but I definitely held his infidelity against him in political arguments.  I absolutely believe in the sanctity of marriage and the importance of working through your problems with your spouse.  I personally think many marriages are premature, ill advised and children being raised in failed marriages definitely face more challenges than those being raised in healthy marriages.  While I do believe divorce is a sin, I also strongly believe in forgiveness.

Having said that, Newt Gingrich’s past is particularly troubling to me.  I had never heard it put so simply until I attended Dave Ramsey’s Entreleadership seminar.  In his seminar, Dave explains, it is a company policy to fire anyone who has cheated on their spouse.  His reasoning is very simple; if your own spouse can’t trust you, how can he trust you with his business?

Applying this principle to the Newt Gingrich situation leaves me in a difficult spot.  If Gingrich wins the nomination, I would like to support him.  I have said before I will support any of the GOP candidates in a head to head situation with Barack Obama.  If I had to guess what I would do if he is to win the nomination, I would most likely vote for Gingrich, but not make much of an effort to support him.  This decision would actually not be much different than when John McCain was the GOP nominee.  I don’t have a problem letting anyone know I voted for McCain, but I also don’t have a problem telling people I was very unhappy with the nomination and personally think Mike Huckabee could have beaten Barack Obama.

This is where I am left completely disappointed with politics and politicians in general.  While I don’t particularly support or trust Gingrich, I feel the same way about all the other candidates.  Most, if not all of these candidates have baggage, and I’m not sure we can ever really know a candidate enough to actually trust them.  I don’t know how we can change things in this country, but anyone wanting to be involved in politics at a level where it becomes a career makes me question their motives.

I would love to know a particular candidate is truly a man of faith, but I don’t think that is possible.  When I look at a race for political office, all I have to base my decision on is the candidate’s stance on certain topics and Newt Gingrich stands head and shoulders above Barack Obama.  If I make the decision to vote for candidates based solely on their faith, honesty, and integrity, I unfortunately don’t think I would ever vote in a presidential election again.  I can’t stand the fact I am here saying I will choose the lesser of two
evils, but that is essentially the conclusion I have come to.  I will
vote for Newt Gingrich over Barack Obama.  I find myself hoping, if
Gingrich does win the nomination, he has changed. For now, I will continue to pray for all of the candidates involved and for our country.
