Desecrating Old Glory as Art at the University of Kansas

According to the United States Code (Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 3), desecrating Old Glory can get you in trouble:

Any person who, within the District of Columbia, in any manner, for exhibition or display, shall place or cause to be placed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, drawing, or any advertisement of any nature upon any flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America; or shall expose or cause to be exposed to public view any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign upon which shall have been printed, painted, or otherwise placed … shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $100 or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both, in the discretion of the court.

Too bad the University of Kansas isn’t located in DC:

The University of Kansas is hosting a display on campus featuring an American flag that has been smeared with black paint by an artist as a commentary on “the current political climate.” …

The flag, “untitled (flag 2),” was designed by German artist Josephine Meckseper and is being displayed in several locations across the United States, including KU, Cornell University, Texas State University, Rutgers University, and the University of South Florida.

Meckseper justifies her insult by raving about Trump withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol, which the US Senate nixed by a vote of 95-0 back in 1997. Presumably, she means the Paris Climate Accord, which would have screwed over the USA mightily and had no likelihood of improving the weather. You can’t expect artists to have a clue when it comes to current events.

If only a German had presented a defaced Old Glory for display on American campuses about 75 years ago. Its reception would have been more appropriate.

On a tip from Lyle.
