J.D. Martinez Follow-up: Some Still Have Spines

By now we know the drill. A famous person is discovered to have said something politically incorrect on social media. The media screams in outrage, mobilizes lynch mobs, and hounds him/her relentlessly. The famous person responds with tearful, obsequious apologies. A career is left sullied, in tatters, or dead. Except it didn’t work out that way with J.D. Martinez.

The Boston Red Sox slugger earned the liberal media’s wrath and a Profiles in Countermoonbattery feature with an old Instagram post featuring a picture of Hitler and the apocryphal (but characteristic) quote, “To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens,” along with his own commentary, “This is why I always stay strapped!” Gasped the willful idiots at the New York Daily News, How dare he promote Hitler?

Now we read this at the Daily Snooze:

“I love my country. I stand by the Constitution and I stand by the second amendment,” [Martinez] said on Tuesday. “It’s something I take pride in and it’s something I’ll back up.”

Then he added some context:

“As most of you guys know I’m Cuban-American, and most of my family was run out of Cuba because of a brutal dictator,” Martinez said, according to The Providence Journal. “It’s terrible. It’s one of those things where I’ll never get to meet some of my family because of it.”

As for the phony controversy the media created in order to shame him for his countermoonbattery:

“Everybody has a right to stand by what they believe in and that’s what makes us American,” Martinez said. “We’re not all going to believe in the same things, but that’s what makes this country so great.”

The Blaze whimpers,

While it’s clear what point Martinez was trying to make, he’d be better avoiding the use of Hitler to make his argument, as such a figure only serves to give opponents ammo to stir up controversy and dismiss him.

On the contrary, his reference to Hitler was entirely appropriate, and the attempt by media moonbats to spin him as promoting Hitler made them look like morons. Never let lefties set the parameters. The Blaze should take a lesson from Martinez and grow a spine.
