Absurd Buyback for Toy Guns

Could anything be more ridiculous than gun buybacks — ludicrous publicity stunts that waste public money on unwanted (or handmade) firearms only so that they can be destroyed? Yes. Officials in Hempstead, New York are hosting a buyback not for guns but for toy guns:

“We don’t want the kids playing with guns,” said Hempstead Village Trustee LaMont Jackson to WABC-TV. “Guns are dangerous.”

That includes not only real guns, not only BB guns, but even squirt guns, Nerf guns, and presumably the gun kids make by sticking out their index finger and cocking back their thumb.

This is because it is not so much guns themselves that are dangerous, as the concept of guns. A gun in the hands of a law-abiding civilian is the concretization of individual liberty. Such a threat must be nipped in the bud, so that kids don’t grow up with notions that would make them more difficult to rule.

“Saying no to guns is important,” Hempstead Village Mayor Don Ryan chimed in, the Blaze reported. “Even toy guns.”

Hempstead is not blazing new trail here; refer for example to Hayward, California; Newark, New Jersey; Saint Louis, Missouri; and Buffalo, New York.

Like rust, progressives always progress. What is next, after social engineers have rendered Americans more toothless and effeminate by forcing boys to grow up without toy guns? Maybe they will go after movies that have guns in them, consigning such entertainment to the Memory Hole lest children be corrupted into not regarding guns with horror. Or possibly advanced video technology will be used to replace the guns with flowers or peace bricks.
