SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR DECEMBER 12th

Macon County

Highlands School will be on a three-hour delay. This will be an optional workday for faculty & staff.

Jackson County

Blue Ridge District will be closed. It will be an optional teacher workday.

Smoky Mountain District will be on a two-hour delay with no buses on icy roads.

Winter Storm Recovery

As of 3 am, Duke Energy had 481 customers without service and Haywood EMC had 409 customers without service. Duke expects to have power restored to all their customers no later than 11 pm tonight.

PATCHY BLACK ICE EXPECTED LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING

As temperatures drop below freezing this evening, any water running off from recent rainfall and snowmelt may re-freeze on area roadways that have not been treated. This could result in patches of black ice late tonight and early Wednesday. The temperature should climb back above freezing around 10 am on Wednesday.

Be prepared for slippery spots on roadways early Wednesday morning. Some roads that appear clear may be covered by a thin layer of ice.

Monitor NOAA Weather Radio for the latest information, forecasts, and warnings.

Outlook

Dry high pressure will move east across northern Florida on Wednesday as a deep low pressure develops near Texas. This low pressure is expected to bring widespread rain to the region from Thursday night into Saturday. Heavy rain is expected on Friday. Low pressure will move away to our east on Sunday with a few days of dry weather expected.
