Berkeley Bans Natural Gas

Natural gas is an ideal fuel: clean and abundant. But unlike solar panels and bird-chopping wind turbines, it is efficient, so progressives disapprove of it. Everything that meets with progressive disapproval will eventually get banned, once moonbats have achieved the political leverage that they already have in Berkeley:

Berkeley became the first city nationwide to ban the use of natural gas in new low-rise residential buildings in a unanimous vote Tuesday by the City Council.

Other building types will follow, until natural gas has been banned completely in the name of appeasing the imaginary climate gods.

The ordinance, introduced by Councilwoman Kate Harrison, goes into effect Jan. 1, 2020, and phases out the use of natural gas by requiring all new single-family homes, town homes and small apartment buildings to have electric infrastructure.

This preference is probably for the same reason they force us to subsidize electric cars. They think electricity comes from their subsidized solar panels and wind turbines. Actually, most of it comes from coal, which is not as clean as natural gas.

But even if this tyrannical ban actually increases harmless carbon emissions, the important thing is that liberal pols coercively signaled their virtue. That’s what they are there for.

The same goes for bureaucrats. A new staff position has been created to implement the ban. Pay is $273,341, no doubt with benefits that those who finance this bloated salary with our taxes could only dream about.
