Happy # 71 Ron Blomberg (the first DH)

We say happy birthday to Ron Blomberg. Ron was born in Atlanta, GA on this day in 1948 and made his debut with the Yankees in 1969.

He played 8 seasons with the Yankees and White Sox: .293 over 461 games. He was primarily a back up player but did hit whenever he got a chance to play as we can see from that batting average.

Ron made history on opening day of the 1973 season. He was the first DH to come to bat that year. He walked against Luis Tiant in a big first inning rally.

The DH has been around for a long time. Some people love it but others hate it. Yet, Keith Crane argued in “The truth about the DH” that it has not really changed the game that much.

Nevertheless, it should be applied to both leagues or eliminated from the AL. It hurts the AL teams when they play away games in the NL parks.
