Americans Spend More on Taxes Than Multiple Major Expenses Combined

As we fight over the arrangement of deck chairs, the statists at the helm continue to send the ship toward the bottom of a sea of Big Government. Already we spend more on taxes than on multiple major expenses combined.

CNS News reports on how intolerable the situation has become:

Americans on average spent more on taxes in 2018 than they did on the basic necessities of food, clothing and health care combined, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey.

BLS breaks the population down into “consumer units,” which are basically households. It found that the average consumer unit was fleeced for $18,617.93 in taxes, while spending $14,758.11 on food, healthcare, and “apparel and services.”

This isn’t a new milestone. We have paid more in taxes than for food, healthcare, and clothing combined for each of the past 6 years. The largest annual margin between taxes and these expenses was last year, indicating that the situation continues to worsen. Electricity and telephone services could be piled atop the other major expenses and it still would not add up to as much as we pay for taxes.

What do we get from Big Government that could possibly justify this massive expenditure? Almost everything government does that is beneficial is accomplished at the local level at relatively low cost. The only real use the federal government has is to defend the country from foreign invasion — which it refuses to do.

Occasionally, we get a tax cut. This is cause for celebration only if it is accompanied by a corresponding cut in spending. Otherwise, ever-growing expenses just pile up on top of the gargantuan national debt, which will eventually have to be paid one way or another.

On a tip from R F.
