Democracy as an Impediment to Climate Action

Bad news for our democratic republic. A chin-pulling University of Toronto poli-sci PhD student named Christian Elliott has determined that democracy poses a threat to the climate.

We tend to assume that democracies, over the long arc of history, work towards progress and justice. But with an issue like climate change, we’re running out of time.

Note how he immediately conflates pushing radical leftism wrapped in the global warming hoax with “progress and justice.” He will go far in academia.

It may come as a surprise, but at the moment, democracy may be an obstacle to the rapid action we need on climate change.

That is the farthest thing from a surprise. “Climate change” is the new world communism. It is all about consolidating power in the hands of a ruling globalist elite. The UN’s sinister Christiana Figueres confirmed it years ago.

Democratic governments naturally swing back and forth between conservative and liberal control. But environmental issues are increasingly associated with liberal values exclusively in countries like Canada and the United States.

That’s because environmentalism has been hijacked by the global warming hoax, which even progressives will sometimes admit is about power, money, and imposing leftist ideology, not about the environment.

The transition from a liberal government to a conservative one often leads to a relapse of environmental policies, including program cuts, delays and even outright rejections or silencing of the science underlying climate change.

You want silencing of science? Put lefties like Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) in charge. He would literally throw you in prison for publicizing science that undermines global warming dogma.

If we are to save both the planet and democracy, we must get conservatives to buy into the global warming hoax. Christian tries his best:

Though by name the “Green New Deal” is associated with large-scale American public investment and thus “big government,” it’s also sensitive to the plight of citizens that might otherwise embody a conservative anti-environment sentiment.

Really? How so?

Coal mine workers, oil rig operators and the towns that support them are subject to major contractions and layoffs as oil prices and fuel demands fluctuate. Creating good, stable jobs to help transition former fossil sector workers into renewable energy brings together a unifying vision of shared prosperity.

Instead of making good money producing real energy, Big Government will give you a make-work job creating make-believe energy. What’s not to like?

If conservatives cling bitterly to their resistance to the Green New Deal anyway, democratic elections might have to go the way of the coal-fired power plant. But at least then the climate will stop fluctuating for the first time in the history of the planet.
