Schumer Wants to Waste $454 billion on Electric Cars

Alarmingly irresponsible ideological extremism is not limited to presidential candidates pandering to the ultra-left to help them in the primaries. Chuck Schumer, Democrat #1 in the Senate, may be as close as the party comes lately to having an adult in the room. He just proposed blowing $454 billion that we do not have on paying people to drive electric cars. These inferior vehicles are considered politically correct even if they are not any better for the environment.

From the New York Post:

Schumer said in a statement that his plan, which would provide rebates of $3,000 or more to individual buyers, would help transition 25% of the US fleet, or 63 million vehicles, away from traditional internal combustion-engine vehicles within 10 years.

The plan would be key to reducing the impact of climate change, Schumer said, noting that the transportation sector accounts for nearly one-third of US carbon output.

Cars could make up every bit of US carbon output, and banning them completely still would not perceptibly affect global temperatures. But global warming ideology is all about gestures, not actual results. No sane person thinks the government can control the climate. Nor is the climate regarded as a problem outside of the leftist fever swamps inhabited by Democrats.

In addition to $45 billion for charging stations and $17 billion in payoffs to crony capitalist automakers,

The plan would award $392 billion in subsidies for owners of gasoline-powered vehicles at least eight years old and in driving condition to trade them in for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid or fuel-cell cars, the statement said. The old vehicles would be scrapped.

Schumer is not crazy or stupid enough to think this would improve the weather. In case you are wondering what the actual point is:

The proposal comes as both Democrats and Republicans are looking to win the support of auto workers in key Midwestern swing states who could be key to determining if President Donald Trump is re-elected and who controls Congress in the November 2020 elections.

Meanwhile, while Democrats use make-believe problems to justify paying extravagant sums to buy votes, real problems continue to spiral out of control. The national debt is quickly closing in on $23 trillion. No one in Washington will lift a finger to stop it from continuing to skyrocket until the economy collapses into utter ruin. When that happens, few will be driving frivolous and economically inefficient electric cars.
