They are there to keep good people safe from bad people.

This is a fantasy based in ignorance. They might think that’s what they are there for but they would be factually wrong.
Even the terms good people and bad people is heavily dependant on who is doing the definitions.
I’ll be chatitable and say the bulk of the police have been fooled, the same as the bulk of the people have been fooled.
