Arizona State Writing Teacher Rejects Merit

Because different people have different abilities and priorities and apply different levels of effort, we will never achieve equity until we have abolished all metrics other than the woke dichotomy of those born “oppressed” (good) versus those born “privileged” (bad). That’s why academics, who gifted us with woke ideology, do their part to abolish standards. At Arizona State University,

Asao Inoue — who teaches first-year writing courses and serves as associate dean for Academic Affairs, Equity, and Inclusion — wrote Labor-Based Grading Contracts: Building Equity and Inclusion in the Compassionate Writing Classroom, in which he advocates for a system of grading that circumvents merit.

Inoue, an expert on “antiracist and social justice theory,” opines that course grades should be determined “purely by the labor students complete, not by any judgments of the quality of their writing.”

Say you’re Jack Nicholson in The Shining, typing “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” over and over, covering hundreds of pages, as you whisper and snicker to yourself. You’ll get an A+ for all that labor.

Students who take writing courses presumably want some constructive feedback so they can improve their skills. Why is it bad to grade the quality of their writing? Inoue explains:

“Because all grading and assessment exist within systems that uphold singular, dominant standards that are racist, and White supremacist when used uniformly.”

Good writers are succinct, so Inoue gets a D. He should have just said, “Because racism” — or to be more honest, “Because moonbattery.”

“Grading, because it requires a single, dominant standard, is a racist and White supremacist practice,” he adds.

Only white people have standards, according to antiracists.

Inoue wants to “destroy grading” and “destroy the White habits of language.” He says that meritocracy is a “myth.” That he holds a job as a teacher supports this contention.

Good thing Inoue isn’t a music teacher. He might want to destroy sheet music — unless you have to work at prestigious Oxford University to be that crazy.
