FreedomWorks’ Member of the Month for February 2022: Sen. Cynthia Lummis

FreedomWorks is excited to honor Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) as our member of the month for February 2022. She served as Wyoming’s representative at large from 2009 to 2017 and has represented the state in the United States Senate since 2021.

The Big Picture

A founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, now-Senator Cynthia Lummis is no stranger to standing firm on her conservative principles regardless of the pressures the Washington D.C. swamp throws her way. In 2021 she held a near-perfect score of 96 percent on the FreedomWorks scorecard.

Born on a cattle ranch, Sen. Lummis spent her life dedicated to serving the people of Wyoming in whatever way she could. Before first coming to Washington in 2008, she served in numerous roles in the Wyoming state government, including both houses of the Wyoming state legislature, State Treasurer, Director of the Office of State Lands and Investments, general counsel to the governor, and a law clerk for the Wyoming Supreme Court.

In the United States Senate, Sen. Lummis is without a doubt one of the most vocal advocates of cryptocurrency and its benefits. Cryptocurrency represents a revolution in the digital and financial world; for the first time, individuals can make direct money payments across the globe at the speed of the internet. Sen. Lummis’ support for digital assets embraces innovation that more lawmakers should take note of and follow.

• In May of 2021, Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Cynthia Lummis created the Financial Innovation Caucus to inform other senators about the importance of cryptocurrency.
• Her work in the Senate is an essential step towards normalizing digital assets while fighting a one-size-fits-all overbearing regulatory framework.
• In an interview with Reason Magazine, Sen. Lummis addressed her ideal vision for cryptocurrency in the United States.

1. “It is to create a regulatory and statutory framework—a sandbox if you will—where innovators know the parameters, but the parameters don’t constrain them in their innovation as they develop new uses, new tools, new opportunities. The blockchain will provide, for example, the opportunity to put both contracts and the money or value associated with that contract on the blockchain. It cannot be adulterated or have there be miscommunication about what the contract entails. It makes a secure framework. And we want to make sure that legislation protects that and doesn’t stifle innovation.”
