On the fringe Dan radio style constantly reminds viewers that we’re watching a movie, but I don’t think it’s sinking in for people.
A movie is a story and a story is a plan with a pre-determined outcome. Even if we consider the concept of ‘choose your own adventure’ it is a number of planned and pre-determined outcomes. Gamed out on super computers or something like that.
So if we really are watching a story it’s really good news. Americans are story experts. Everyone has a hundred Netflix plots in their heads that they can recount forwards and backwards.
We also have the tools of story telling to consider. How plots and character arcs are constructed. For example, there is the arc type of the shape-shifter to consider. Kim GoGwen has been pointing out in her shows that Trump is a shape-shifter. What is she talking about?
When we think of the characters on tv playing important positions, the question as to whether the real person is still playing the part comes up a lot. This concern doesn’t matter when we’re watching a story. The real actor can be switched out so long as the new actor continues to play the same character arc. Remember when Chrissy was switched out on Three’s Company for another dumb blonde? It may be an awkward adjustment but the show continues.
The shape-shifter changes their story arc at some point in the story, usually towards the end of the story. Hal from 2001 is a good example, computer that shape-shifts during the movie…
The Alien movie series uses this device with a droid shape-shifter. The Thing, an actual body shape-shifter, takes over a base in Antarctica and starts killing scientists.
The wolf reveals himself to be a shape-shifter when he takes off the sheep mask. Once a character shape-shifts they are never thought of as the same. We will never believe the wolf is really a sheep again, no matter how good the acting or disguise.

Sometimes a character plays it straight for a long time before shape-shifting, like Darth Vader for two Star Wars movies. We have many in politics who have revealed themselves to be shape-shifters. Many of them surrounded Trump in fact. Pence, for example, shape-shifted when he had the opportunity to give the election results back to the states. He revealed his true alliagence. Bill Barr shape-shifts when he says he hasn’t seen any evidence of election interference. Kelly Loeffler, after using Trump to get elected senator in Georgia, quickly shape-shifts in office and says she can’t support Trump after what happened on Jan 6.

Trump shape-shifted during Covid and started following a completely different character arc than the one he played for most of his presidency. The man who loves to fire people couldn’t fire anyone he himself hired. Trump doesn’t fight against the Plandemic he aids it… sires the vax. And when it came to the last stand on the 2020 election, the strong Trump we were expecting wilted and simply gave away the White House. Trump is a shape-shifter. Meaning the character of Trump playing a part in a movie we’re all watching, he should be thought of as the same. The guy who promised to, “never ever let us down.”
