GENERAL OUTLOOK

Cooler, drier weather can be expected from Sunday into early next week although some light precipitation may fall in the North Carolina mountains to start the week. Temperatures will slowly warm in the second half of the week ahead of the next cold front.

Partial Solar Eclipse Today

There will be a partial solar eclipse today in Macon County. The eclipse starts at 11.45am and the maximum obscuration of the sun by the moon in Franklin will be 47.2% at 1.12PM and the eclipse ends at 2.42pm. An image has been included to assist you in visualizing it.

Solar Safety

Unless you have solar eclipse glasses, please do not look directly at the sun. Instead, you can use indirect means to observe the progress of the eclipse as described below:

Pinhole Method
An eclipse can be observed indirectly by projecting an image of the sun onto a white piece of paper or a flat surface. The “pinhole method” is the simplest indirect method. Simply make a small hole in a piece of paper or cardboard, hold it up, and let the light to shine through the pinhole onto another piece of paper or other flat surface. Moving the two pieces of paper closer together makes the image brighter; moving them apart makes the image larger but dimmer. The image will be sharper if the hole is smaller. Remember not to look at the sun through the pinhole! This is only suitable for watching the eclipse indirectly.
Magnified Projection
A similar technique can be used to observe an enlarged image of the eclipse. An enlarged image of the sun can be focused onto any flat surface using binoculars, a telescope, a magnifying glass, or any lens. To make it easier to focus the image, it is recommended that you use a support or tripod to hold the binoculars or lens. The distance between the lens and the flat surface must be adjusted until a round image of the sun appears. The lens is too close to the flat surface if the light is focussed into a single point. Always use a filter while looking at the sun through a lens.
