How To Keep Children Safe On The Internet

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

In a recent web-series, comedian Hassan Minhaj was asked why he would he not let his children use the internet. “Because that’s where everything happens’, snapped the comedian. In this digital age, this cannot be truer.

The internet has become a hub for all that happens in the world, broken down into figments and bits.

The same thing that makes the internet such an excellent resource is exactly what is so bothersome about it – the fact that everything is out there!

Keeping your children safe

Your child does not know how the mass populace thinks or behave on a global platform. However, it is always wise to consider the least favorable alternative in these scenarios and then work from there.

The internet, along with the plethora of benefits that it brings, can be a source of explicit and unfiltered content, which may inadvertently influence the mental growth of your child. Hence, it’s always best to stay on the watch.

Supervising your children

A common mistake that a lot of parents make when introducing their children to the internet is that they place excessive restrictions on them. These include things such as never using the internet out of sight, or using it only in the main room.

This, in the long run, does more harm than good.  This also increases the risk of children using the internet in your absence to find out what irks you.

The right approach to introducing your child to the internet is by telling them a brief overview of it and its merit and demerits and then work from there.

Adult supervision isn’t mandatory

A child’s trust and a child’s promise are two things that if fostered correctly, they have the potential to go a long way. When introducing your child to the internet, make sure that you emphasize the fact that you trust them and the judgment they make.

This will build a bond that would encourage them to reach out to you if they ever feel conflicted about anything whatsoever about the internet. Furthermore, you can permit them to the use the internet in their privacy but for a limited amount of time daily.

No social media!

Try to ensure that your child stays away from social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. These websites bring people together, which can have as many dire consequences as good ones.

Since your child is young, networking online isn’t on the top of their priority. Perhaps the only reason they want to register online is for the thrill of it. Let your child know clearly that this will not be tolerated and they can do it once they’re older.

You also have to make sure that your child understands the negatives and the bad side of the internet so that they don’t feel left out of the bigger picture.

You also run the risk, when the child’s friends are visiting, exposing the child to content that is inappropriate, during their private time together (you see, you cannot barge in every now and then to check what they are doing.

Agree. Parents have to take care of kids and their safety even more than ever. Internet doesn’t bring anything good for the new generation. I made my choice and installed an app called mspy on my kids` phones. It allows me to view a list of all apps installed on their devices and block those I don’t wish them to use. Also, I can supervise kids` Internet activity, view the list of all visited websites and block the unwanted ones if needed. I had to undertake such measures and have no regrets.
