The White House’s proposed budget purports to put America first. It puts Appalachia last — taking aim at vital funding for economic development and other programs that are a lifeline for many in our region.

N.C. counties make energy efficiency history

Yancey and Mitchell counties in western N.C. became the first counties in America to pass resolutions supporting the development of “on-bill financing” by the local electric utility to help residents afford home energy efficiency improvements.

The energy burden

Residents in East Tennessee, like in many places across Appalachia, spend a significant portion of their income on energy bills. Many service agencies and churches already struggle to help everyone in their communities who needs it with payment and weatherization assistance, but with threats to federal funding, they may face an even greater demand.

Standing with miners and their families

In a matter of weeks, health care benefits for thousands of retired union coal miners will run out. In just a matter of years, the entire United Mine Workers pension plan, which covers nearly 90,000 former coal miners and their widows, may become insolvent.
