How to Avoid Ants in Your Camper or RV

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

My boyfriend and I recently drove a small campervan through Australia. One thing we learned very quickly into our campervan trip was how to store food properly. If you think you can just stock your camper cupboards like you do at home, think again. Did you know that one of the smallest living creatures on the planet can cause complete havoc? What could possibly cause this terror you ask? Ants. Seemingly harmless, but in great numbers…they mean war. Here is how to avoid ants in your camper or RV:

Don’t Let Ants Win the Battle or the War

When you think about how small an ant is, it isn’t surprising that they manage to sneak in from tiny nooks and crannies; but when we noticed long trails of ants running along the inside of the camper we knew they we getting in from somewhere specific. We discovered that we had unknowingly paved the way for them. At night when we plugged our camper into the campsites power socket we left the excess cord lying on the ground.

This ultimately gave them an upwards suspension bridge and invited them onto the camper where they then entered our van via cracks in the door frames and proceeded to eat all our food. When I say “eat our food” I mean they either ate or contaminated all our food! Being new “campervaners” we had not properly stored all our food into plastic containers and so the ants managed to chew their way through plastic and cardboard!

My Ant Prevention Tips:

  1. Store ALL food (apart from canned goods) in plastic containers.
  2. Do not leave unsealed food lying around your campervan.
  3. Ensure that you have not parked your car on or close to an ant hill.
  4. If plugging your camper into power, keep all of the cord off the ground.

Those are my suggestions on how to avoid ants in your camper or RV. So, unless you like your interior decoration to be ant-covered walls be sure you properly store your food and take care when choosing a spot to set up camp. These tips should save you from going to war with these persistent buggers and prevent them from enjoying your food before you do.

But remember, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”
