Southwest Virginia Land Described as “Ground Zero” for Elk Restoration A recent land acquisition by the Nature Conservancy has the potential to increase elk restoration efforts and boost tourism on more than 1,000 acres of land in Buchanan and Dickenson Counties, portions of which were mined. |

Biden Proposes $235 Million for Appalachian Regional Commission The Biden Administration’s plan includes $1 billion for a federal economic development grant program in Appalachia and $235 million for broadband expansion, infrastructure, workforce development and more. |

Virginia Awards $100,000 for Back of the Dragon Lodging in Tazewell The town of Tazewell will use the funds to convert the Sunnyside Manor apartments into a 12-room short-stay lodging facility near the Back of the Dragon Welcome Center. |

Southwest VA and TN Could Become a Model for Solar on Former Coal Mines Last year, a collaboration between Virginia and The Nature Conservancy mapped out potential solar sites on Conservancy properties. In May, Sun Tribe Development was selected to help develop large-scale solar on mine lands across the region.

When: June 8 at 6 p.m. The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy (DMME) is hosting a public listening session on June 8 at 6 p.m. to receive comments from residents on how the state can support Southwest Virginia’s economic transition. The listening sessions are part of an initiative that DMME is calling “Reenergize Southwest Virginia,” created to implement the requirements of Virginia legislation enacted this year. The legislation directs DMME, in coordination with stakeholders, to create recommendations as to how the Commonwealth can provide economic transition support to the coalfield region. |
