Incredible Photos of People Living Off The Grid Who Abandoned Civilization for Life in the Wilderness
Photographer Antoine Bruy not only traveled and lived with off-grid families for three years, but captured captivating photos of their Walden-esque existence.

When screeching city noises and demands from the 9-5 job become too much, most people can only dream of what quiet isolation in the rural countryside could be like. But French photographer Antoine Bruy turned that dream into a reality by hitchhiking across Europe from 2010 to 2013.
The artist wandered through remote mountain regions without any fixed destination or route in mind, but along the way met several individuals who had willingly abandoned hectic city life in exchange for retreat in the deep wilderness. These people sacrificed modern comforts for greater autonomy and freedom, and in result became inspiration to the inquisitive photographer.

In Bruy’s series Scrublands, he documented the homes and faces of the people he countered, by chance, who live far away from civilization. Living with these individuals for days to weeks at a time, Antoine helped them farm land and raise livestock while becoming educated on their self-sufficient lifestyles. Once teachers, students, and engineers, these people now rely on makeshift buildings, recovered materials, and agriculture in order to survive off-grid.

The compelling photos capture the rustic beauty and idyllic setting of people who have chosen a Walden-esque existence tucked away in secluded, wild environments. “The people and places depicted in my pictures display various fates which I think should not only be seen at a political level, but more importantly, as daily and immediate experiences,” he explains. “These are, in some ways, spontaneous responses to the societies these men and women have left behind. This documentary project is an attempt to make a kind of contemporary tale and to give back a little bit of magic to our modern civilization.”

Civilization went down the tube in the middle ages, everything was lost and needed to be either reinvented or rediscovered. We’ve gone a long way since then. Why regress?? Just because some idiots don’t want to pay taxes and utilities?? Well, tell you what – if I were in charge of a hospital and one of these nuts came to be treated I’d say go back to your neck of the woods and treat yourself with plants!

What do you think is getting ready to happen to = us? Millions of us are in for a rough ride. Most of us don’t know how to live in privation . Most of us don’t have the skills to survive. But it’s coming and it was orchestrated.
The trick is to purposefully utilize all of the greatest benefits modern science has to offer without losing our autonomy and ability to guide our own trajectory.
So…. looking at it this way, if you pay ANY taxes, you are paying for war, when it would be easier, nicer, and cheaper (not to mention better foreign policy) to just feed the people we feel the need to bomb.

Hate to admit but I’m way too domesticated. IF the grid goes down for an extended period during the hot months in Florida (May – Sept) — many WILL die within days and I might be one of ‘em.
The most I’ve gone was a week each with Frances and Gene in ’04, and a few shorter durations during other hurricanes. Add intolerable 24 hr heat & humidity to a crappy situation and the moods get even hotter in short time — especially for the elderly, folks with youngn’s, disabilities, or narc & alc addictions (see; half of FL).
There’s a reason Florida’s population boom occured post-WWII when A/C was available to average homeowners, not just movie theaters and fancy hotels.
Went camping with friends on an island recently – fished, swam, built a fire, cooked out — drank beer. Sounded fun at the time. By midnight the no-see-em’s and skeeters were just ridiculous, deet or not — and hiding in the cabin (no A/C) was too warm & muggy, especially for the ol’ lady making it nearly impossible to sleep.
We bailed, back in the comforts of home by 1am

None of these people look particularly happy and the “buildings” look like they can fall apart if hit by moderate winds. But. They wouldn’t even realize if and when the grid went down except maybe the ones using the radio.
These are not “incredible” photos. they are just photos.
Incredible photos would be of those who are making a much better go of it than these poor people and I’m sure there are many who are, but they probably, sensibly, prefer their anonymity.
Why don’t they build some real housing? Just because you are off the grid doesn’t mean you have to live in a hovel. And for god sake have a wash and get/make some decent clothes.
