The Real Vlad The Impaler! Dracula vs Mehmed Fatih - Night Attack at Targoviste

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Dracula is a 19th Century character based on dark stories that emerged from the marches of Transylvania telling of a man who stalked the Carpathians mountains by night and left rivers of blood in his wake.

While as far as I know there never was a vampire of such a name living at Bran Castle, the name and imagery conjured up draw their inspiration from a real, historical figure who lived in the 15th Century and is the topic of this video. Vlad Tepes, (Romanian for “Impaler”) was the son of a Wallachian voivode, Vlad Dracul, lending his name to the future vampire.

In this video I’ll explore the life of Vlad Tepes in his struggles against his Hungarian, Saxon and Turkish neighbours and how in some ways this led to his being immortalised as the famous Dracula. Also a big thank you and an even bigger shoutout to Hikma History who is featured in this video and has his own video on the Ottomans in Eastern Europe which you can watch by following the upcoming link!

On the night of June 17th, the soldiers of Vlad III, the Wallachian leader rode into the Ottoman camp with the aim of assassinating the Ottoman Sultan. Chaos ensued. If this seems like a particularly bold maneuver, we should expect no less from the inspiration behind Dracula, the blood-sucking vampire.

Whilst the movies and books have sensationalized his life, the real life story of Vlad the Impaler is no less interesting; especially his contest against the Ottomans. His biggest foe happened to be a titan of history in his own right, none other than Sultan Mehmet II, given the nickname ‘Fatih’ or ‘Conqueror’ for his conquest of Constantinople. This is Dracula vs Mehmet the Conqueror.
