When I was younger, I did a lot of international traveling. I clocked out with visiting 59 countries and territories. One of the places I truly loved was Scotland. When my ex-wife, my stepson Jason Porter and I, visited England, Wales and Scotland, one of the places I definitely wanted to see in Scotland was Stirling Castle. I gravitated towards Stirling Castle because I knew it was haunted and I loved the history of this castle. This is one of the fortifications that William Wallace fought for, and you can see that in the movie Braveheart, in which Mel Gibson played William Wallace. Many people think that Braveheart was filmed at Stirling Castle, but it wasn’t. Many other movies were filmed there including Game of Thrones, Outlander and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Other movies were filmed there, but it’s too much to list. This majestic castle sits atop a basalt crag, 250 feet above the Forth River. Talk about majestic. When I first saw this castle, my jaw dropped, I was in awe and felt like I stepped into a fantasy world. This castle was built in a strategic location in which you can observe the highlands and the lowlands. The poet Alexander Smith called the castle the “huge brooch”. The castle was built in the 15th century and before that, there was a wooden fort 300 years on the spot where Stirling Castle sits today. From the castle, the king or queen residing could observe battles that were being fought for the independence of Scotland from England. Many kings resided at this castle. In fact, Mary Queen of Scots resided at the castle for awhile and she was crowned in the castle’s chapel in 1543. Charles I also stayed at the castle briefly and when they executed Charles I, his son Charles II – The Earl of Mar was the last reigning monarch that lived in this castle. The castle after that became a military center and prison.

The Green Lady
One of the most famous ghosts in Stirling Castle is The Green Lady. Our tour guide told us that the castle is very haunted and most people in the darkness of night, encounter the Green Lady. Legend has it that the Green Lady was Queen Mary’s maid servant. This maid servant to Queen Mary had a premonition that Queen Mary was in trouble. The maid servant rushed to the bedchamber of Queen Mary and discovered that the massive drapes were on fire and Queen Mary was asleep. The maid servant pulled Queen Mary to safety. It is said that if you encounter the Green Lady she is somewhat a harbinger of doom. If you encounter the Green Lady stay on high alert, because something bad could happen to you. Hearing that I wasn’t too keen in encountering the Green Lady. There was a mess cook for some Scottish troops at the castle and the mess cook encountered the Green Lady and passed out. I asked the tour guide if anything bad happened to the mess cook and the tour guide said “no”.

The Whipped
Another ghost that haunts Stirling Castle is The Whipped. Ewan Thomson of Plockton, Scotland was walking around Stirling Castle, when he heard an odd sounding moaning. Ewan went to investigate and came upon a man with his arms spread out in the air, tied to ropes. The man’s bare back was bloody and full of red welts as if he was whipped. He was moaning loudly. Ewan first thought this was an actor playing out a historical scene and to Ewan’s shock, the whipped man disappeared and when he vanished, the crackling sound of a whip was heard. Ewan says that there were 3 crackling whipping sounds and then a bloody scream and the paranormal encounter that Ewan had, was now ended. I believe Ewan encountered a “residual” haunting, something that has been imprinted into the atmosphere and plays out over and over again. This is strong negative energy.

The Stirling Archer
Rowan Barland of Bellshill, Scotland was on the tour with us. Rowan tells us she has visited Stirling Castle 7 times and her first time, was when she was 7 years old. Rowan was with her parents on this first tour of the castle. Rowan says she loves this castle and its colorful history. Rowan says that she encountered a ghost at Stirling Castle. She says the ghost was an archer from long ago. The ghostly archer was pacing up and down the flanks of the castle and she could see his bow that was shouldered. The ghostly archer wore a Scot’s bonnet and a green leine (shirt). He had a long thick beard and mustache. He had long reddish hair. Rowan said she was petrified when seeing this archer and the archer started walking towards her and Rowan couldn’t move and the archer walked right through her and disappeared into a wall. Rowan says that she is psychic and she is more sensitive to seeing ghosts and that is probably why she had this encounter. Rowan says she goes back to the castle hoping to come across the archer one more time. Rowan says that she is used to her psychic abilities and is no longer afraid when she sees ghosts.
