From 1974 to 1976, I was stationed in Nurnberg, Germany – Merrill Barracks. I was very fortunate, because I worked as an undercover MP (Military Policeman) in Germany with DST (Drug Suppression Team) – CID (Criminal Investigation Division). Working undercover, I was sent all over Germany and I also took advantage of military discounted trips. Some of those military discounted trips were trips to Furth in Wald to see the Dragon Fest. Furth im Wald is right at the Czechoslovakia border. Paris / Versailles – France; Lake Constance; Garmisch – Partenkirchen; Zugspitze; Munich; The Rhine River and the rocks where the legend of the siren Lorelei would mesmerize sailors with her voice and cause them to crash into the rocks. There is so much history in Germany and so much to see. Of course, I saw a whole lot more, but if I were to list everything I saw, it would be the size of a book. A place that I visited and was very fond of was the isolated village of Wolfsegg. Overlooking this village is a mighty fortress named the Wolfsegg Castle. There is a story, well actually a couple of stories in regard to a baroness named Klara. Klara was married to the rich baron Ulrich von Laaber.

One story has Klara sleeping around with military troops that take lodge at the castle. Klara doesn’t get enough attention from her husband Ulrich, because he is always on the road for his military travels. Ulrich built the beautiful castle to protect the village and to give a beautiful home for his wife. The castle was built in 1028. Even though the castle is very beautiful from the outside, there was violence inside. There are stories of murders behind the castle walls and one of those stories is of a love triangle that went South. Remember, how I told you one story is that Klara was sleeping around with many men. Well, the other story is that Klara was set up by her own family in having an affair with a military man that took lodging at the castle. The family set it up in which she would be caught by her husband Ulrich. Ulrich in a fit of rage kills Klara and her lover. Klara’s family in a moment of retribution kill Ulrich. Klara’s family ultimate plan was to take ownership of the castle, so they set up Klara in an adulterous relationship, but things got out of hand and Klara met her demise by Ulrich.

Wolfsegg Castle Lady in White
Legend has it that Klara now haunts the castle. They call her the Wolfsegg Castle Lady in White. Klara is seen wearing white robes, she constantly walks halls and stairways. Tourists feel cold spots or they will have a cold gust of wind hit them and they believe this is Klara. Some tourists have seen glowing orbs move about in the castle. Skeptics believe that the glowing orbs are merely will-o-wisps that originate from bat filled caverns. When I visited this castle, I was with my military buddy at the time Wayne Johnson. Wayne actually claims that while he was exploring one section of the castle, he heard a woman whisper in his ear and she said…..”du bist hübsch”. When he heard this voice, he felt a hand on his back side. Wayne was somewhat a jokester, so it was very hard for me to believe his story, but as long as I knew Wayne, he insisted the story was true.

Schwaighauser Forest Werewolf
Close to Wolfsegg Castle is Schwaighauser Forest. Legend has it that human bones and animal bones have been found in an unknown cavern in this forest. Locals believe that the bones are from people who go missing in this forest. A German resident named Gunter Hoffman says that when he was hunting in the forest, he came upon a 6 foot 5 inches bipedal hairy man that had a face like a dog or wolf. His fur was brownish in color, but there was some white fur on his face. The werewolf creature snarled at Gunter and Gunter shot a round into the air frightening the creature. The creature ran off into the woods. Gunter believes he encountered some kind of werewolf. Hans Lehmann a German tourist says that he once heard a wolf like howl coming out of the forest and a blood curdling scream that sounded like a man. Hans says this happened in 1984 and he was hiking in the forest. The howling and scream scared him so much, he ran out of the forest as quickly as possible. Never to return.

Bodenlehrpfad Schwaighauser Forest Flower Gnomes
Another forest just South of Wolfsegg Castle is Bodenlehrpfad Schwaighauser Forest. Mila Werner and her friend Ida Maier were two German nationals that I knew in Nurnberg, Germany. Mila and Ida had an amazing story. They said that on a beautiful August day in 1971, they had a picnic in the forest. Next to their picnic blanket were beautiful blue wildflowers called Blaue Blume. As they were enjoying their fruits and sandwiches, 6 of the blue flowers transformed into 6 tiny people and 2 of the tiny people jumped on their picnic blanket and stole some cherries and ran off. Mila says that the 6 gnomes had silly looking outfits on that were blue in color and 2 of the gnomes were wearing pointed hats. Ida says this forest is infested with little people and they were fortunate to actually have an encounter with them. Mila and Ida said they were not afraid at all and thought the little people looked cute.
