8 Awesome Budget-Friendly Ways to Celebrate Labor Day is a post originally published on: Everything Finance – Everything Finance – Its all about Money!

As fast as this summer has flown by, it can only mean one thing. Labor Day is right around the corner! But, this year is shaping up to be quite a bit different because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Which means that we are going to have to find some more creative ways to celebrate Labor Day. And since the pandemic has created a bit of financial uncertainty, a lot of us are sticking much closer to our budgets than normal. With that in mind, we have created an awesome list of ways to celebrate Labor Day that are also budget-friendly.

1. Camping

Camping is one of my favorite past times. And it is a great thing to do, or try, while social distancing. Camping not only doesn’t cost very much for an overnight spot, but it can be a lot of family fun too! If you aren’t sure where to go, then check out uscampgrounds.info for the most in-depth list of campgrounds nationwide and in Canada. Or, if you already have some favorite spots, but want to try and find some FREE places to camp, then check out freecampsites.net. These are few and far between, but if one happens to be close to you, then it is probably worth checking out.

If you don’t already have camping equipment, some of the items can be pretty cheap to pick up. But, the bare necessities include:

Of course, there are plenty of other things you could bring. But, if you are starting with nothing, these are the 3 things you will need. The rest is just fluff and you can make do with what you have. I know that I have gone camping with not much else many times and it works out just fine. Plus, it ends up being a lot cheaper and a whole lot less to pack.

2. Hiking

Hiking is another great option to celebrate Labor Day that won’t cost you much. Or, in some cases, anything really. If any of the hiking trails near you are open, that is. A lot of states have been shutting down the hiking trails in order to continue social distancing. So you will need to check your local hiking spots to see if they are open.

However, a great way to go hiking is to try the much less popular spots. Look for places off the beaten path and plan to hike there instead. Here in North Carolina, we have so many different hiking options it could make your head spin. But, some of the parks and trails are much more popular, so they are closed. Therefore, we are looking at the harder to find and less traveled spots instead. That way we have less of a chance of running across anyone else.

And by looking for the harder to find trails, you will also get to explore more of your own state at the same time. Bonus!

3. Picnic

Packing a picnic is another great way to celebrate Labor Day with your family. Since a lot of restaurants aren’t open right now and people aren’t generally hosting barbecue’s, this is a viable alternative. By creating a picnic, you will still get to make your regular Labor Day fare, but in a slightly different way.

Once you decide on the foods you want to prepare, then you need to figure out how to pack it all up for a picnic. Depending upon your food choices, and family size, there are many different picnic basket options. But, you may also want to consider packing these items for your picnic too:

And, if you want to get really fancy, you might want to consider a picnic backpack bag that has all of the accessories in it, for easier travel.

4. Create Your Own Water Fun

Since it is still the dog days of summer, enjoying some water fun can really help cut the heat. But, if your pool is closed, or you don’t have your own, then you will have to get creative. Luckily for all of us, there are plenty of really fun water options that don’t cost a ton of money. And if you really want to have fun, then get a few different options to create your own mini water park.

This way, you don’t have to worry about social distancing or sanitizing, because it is just you and your family enjoying the water fun.

Some great ideas to create your own water fun are:

No matter which options you choose, get prepared to have a lot of awesome water fun in your own yard!

5. Perambulate

One of my favorite things to do with my family is to perambulate. This means to wander aimlessly around our town in hopes that we will find new things we didn’t even know existed. I have been doing this with my family for years now, and we always find some new and exciting stuff right in our backyard.

Since most of us aren’t traveling much, or at all, this year, this is a great alternative. After all, how well do you really know the place you live? Most of us don’t know our cities as well as we think we do. So getting out and taking a perambulation jaunt through your city can only help you appreciate it more. Plus, you never know what hidden gems you might stumble upon. And, it’s free to do also!

6. Home Renovation Projects

I am a huge fan of home renovation projects. But, like most people, I don’t usually have the time needed to perform most of them. COVID-19 has changed that for a lot of us. So, staying home to work on home renovation projects could be a great way to celebrate Labor Day. Since we are all spending much more time in our homes now, it only makes sense to make them as comfortable as possible.

And, a lot of stores are offering huge discounts and deals for home renovation project supplies right now. So, if you were thinking about getting started on a project, this might be one of the best times to do it.

7. Early Online Holiday Shopping

Even though it may only be the very end of summer, it is never too early to start thinking about holiday shopping. I realize that sounds silly. But, the earlier you shop, sometimes the better the deals. And, ultimately, the more money you can save because you aren’t last minute impulse shopping.

Shopping throughout the year for my children for holiday has been something I have done since they were little. It has helped me save a lot of money and causes so much less stress when the holiday season rolls around. So, if you haven’t started thinking about this yet, now is the time. Plus, a lot of online stores have huge sales going on right now. So you might be able to pick up everything on your list early and save a ton of money at the same time. What’s not to love about that?

8. Rest and Relaxation

And last, but certainly not least, rest and relaxation are on the docket for Labor Day. This year has caused a lot of stress for people all over the world. And one of the best ways to help mitigate your stress level is with rest and relaxation. So, take the 3 day weekend off. Get some much needed sleep and do things that help you relax. While that will look different for everyone, here are some of my favorite ways to relax:

    • Read a book
    • Nap in a hammock
    • Take a walk
    • Hike
    • Ride my bike on the Greenway
    • Work on a puzzle
    • Swim laps in the pool
    • Play with dogs
    • Play games with my kids
    • Have a movie day

No matter which options resonate with you most, choose a few that help you relax the most and enjoy the weekend to the fullest.
