Why Is the Cure Worse Than the Ailment

I now live in a prison of 47 million inmates. Any allowed out on day release run a gauntlet of interrogative cops and troops. Questioned, I face a €500- €2000 fine and an order to return to my cell unless I satisfy the questioning officer that I have a valid reason to be on the freedom side of the slammer.

I am fortunate in that I have a large garden to exercise in. But, it is still much smaller than a prison’s exercise yard.

Over 50 percent of my country’s population believe their jobs are at risk. Their fear is not their being victims of the virus but as consequence of their government’s draconian answer to it. As my mother was fond of saying, ‘the cure is far worse than the ailment’.

One doesn’t have to be an expert in the ways of government to realise that no nation, not even a primitive people can survive a complete ban on movement.

It was the early 1970s when my Ukrainian acquaintance was born in what was then the Soviet Union. My friend is a university graduate, a schoolteacher for 23 years.

As for us all, she had no choice in her nationality or homeland. It was therefore wretched that her people endured three total economic collapses. One was in 1989 when denied any further Capitalist support the USSR disintegrated. She and her peoples also suffered two further collapses in her native Ukraine.

By a squeak, her country is Europe’s largest nation and is similar in most respects to Spain, Germany or France. Ukraine provided the industrial, space, science and transport infrastructure of the Soviet Union. It was before the Washington DC sponsored regime change (2014) a great country to grow up in.

Like most of us, my colleague is a long-term resident of the European Union. She tells me that the current clampdown in the EU is far worse, incomparably more intrusive and restrictive than were a consequence of any of the economic collapses in the former Soviet Union her generation endured.

I am far from alone in saying that when the dust settles the consensus of the people will declare that it is and was a gross overreaction by government and the authorities.

Conspiracy theories abound. Bear in mind that those dubbed conspiracy theorists are those brave enough to question known liars in government.

My hunch is that the contagion was used as a dress rehearsal for Martial Law in the event of economic collapse. I am sure you have your own theories, most are to some degree valid.

One thing for certain is that things will never again be the same. Society has changed and not for the better. Don’t blame a virus the effects of which are far less than those of flu.

Another close friend is an eminent doctor who is based at a hospital in Australia. He made the news when he was confirmed Corona positive. Yesterday, he emailed me: ‘It lasted just two days, I feel fine. To be honest I have had colds that were worse’. I rest my case. 

A video tweeted by police in Murcia, Spain showed someone walking around the empty streets dressed in a giant inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex costume.
