Nashville’s Chapter of Amnesty International Says No to Injustice

Amnesty International is the world’s largest human rights movement, according to amnesty.org.  The Nashville chapter is living up to this statement with a large gathering of human rights agencies in Tennessee this fall.

“Our plan is to bring everyone together who stands for human rights,” says Julie Brinker who co-organizes the Nashville chapter. Brinker is the Director of Community Affairs for the Church of Scientology, and, in this role, brings a history of commitment to social justice issues. “I’m committed to educating others about their human rights.”  

Nashville’s Amnesty International chapter will be hosting a statewide conference in the fall and plans to include all human rights oriented organizations. “Any group that is working to end injustice and renew hope and human dignity will be there,” says Brinker.

In past years, the Nashville group strived to put education and communication into action during the conference. Speakers from human rights organizations would each give action steps for what could be done to make a difference. Amnesty members would also provide letters on behalf of prisoners of conscience that could be signed on the spot.

With a statewide conference, including Amnesty members and other human rights organizations from Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville, more is bound to happen.

Organizations who have presented in past years include the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, Conexion Americas, Free for Life International, Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Coalition for Education about Immigration, Tennessee Human Rights Commission and the Metro Nashville Human Relations Commission, among others.
