What is to be done about the rising police brutality?

UC Davis police officer Wayne Tilcock pepper-sprays student campus demonstration in 2011

Whether it’s getting pepper-sprayed in the face, or shot and killed in the back while in custody, the police force throughout the US continues to have notorious reputation of being an institution that protects its own interests, rather than one that exists “to protect and serve” the public.  In yet another instance of police abuse, a California Highway Patrol officer was filmed brutally beating a woman to the ground.  This just one among thousands of such incidents that happen yearly in the US, but one big reason such incidents seem to be more visible is because of how easy it is to film these cases and how frequently activists and other people are doing so.

Police misconduct among many communities, particularly among people of color, is news we are accustomed to. According to the Cato Institute, in 2010 alone, over 6000 police officers nationwide have been involved in various forms of misconduct, and almost 7000 victims of abuse were involved.  To make things worse, in a recent investigation into how complaints against police abuse are handled in central New Jersey, local newspapers state that 99% of complaints go unanswered.

For many of us who understandably (I would even argue rightly) feel threatened from encounters with the police, several organizations have been putting forth resources to protect oneself against police abuse. Recently, Copwatch has distributed this document via their Twitter feed that breaks down what kind of terminology the police could use on you and how you can most effectively and peacefully deal with any given police encounter. CopBlock continually provides updates on the latest cases on police brutality and how said cases are being followed up.

When our police force considers stopping kids who are late to school or using a taser on a child, we can see just how absurd the lack of regulation is getting. The need for reform is becoming excruciatingly dire, especially when it comes to people of color.  What we can do is continue to educate ourselves and others on how to handle risky encounters with the police and document all instances of police misconduct we see in our communities.
