6 GITMO Detainees Now Refugees

The United States has transferred a half-dozen former U.S. prisoners or so-called, ‘enemy combatants” to Uruguay in the initial stages of their release and part of the President’s larger plan to shut-down the facility. CNN affiliate Canal 10 Uruguay reported on Sunday that in the middle of the night a U.S. medical aircraft transporting former Guantanamo Bay detainees landed at a military base in Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital.

The Department of Defense (DoD) acknowledged the release by saying,

“The United States is grateful to the government of Uruguay for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.”

Uruguayan President Jose Mujica made a statement on the presidential website,

“We have offered our hospitality for humans suffering a heinous kidnapping in Guantanamo. The unavoidable reason is humanitarian.”

One of the prisoners released is Syrian, Jihad Ahmed Mujstafa Diyab, who had a detainee held for 12-years without a trial. He has filed a lawsuit challenging the military’s procedures regarding hunger strikes and force feeding prisoners.

Some GOP members are unhappy with the releasing of any GITMO detainees. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) says the Obama administration needs to, “rethink” releasing these prisoners. On CNN’s, “State of the Union”, Rogers told host Candy Crowley,

“I argue that maybe we ought to rethink what we’re doing here. I have been opposed to this notion that we’re going to farm out Gitmo (enemy combatants) to places.”

The transfer was approved by the  United States’ Guantanamo Review Task Force. The review was prompted by a 2009 Executive Order by President Obama.
