April 25: Casino for NH close to reality?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Two casinos or one?

That has been the lingering question in Concord as the N.H. Legislature considered SB 113, which authorizes two casinos in the state.

The Senate has already passed the bill, and this week the House Ways and Means Committee took up the measure, narrowly giving it its blessing.

Gov. Maggie Hassan weighed into the issue, saying she didn’t think the market here would support two casinos. She has long supported a single casino for the state.

The House measure was amended to delay the licensing of a second casino until at least one year after the completion of a performance audit of the first casino.

“I continue to believe that a one-casino plan is in the best interest of New Hampshire and that there is market analysis to support that. However, the House amendment to Senate Bill 113 is an improvement and compromise that does not allow for two simultaneously issued licenses and ensures that there is thorough evaluation and oversight by both the legislature and the market before an additional license can be issued.” Hassan said in a statement.

The casino bill vote is expected in the House on Wednesday. It will be a close vote, as others related to casino gambling have been in the past.

Remember the hack of all that Sony email and the embarrassment it caused some studio executives and others in Hollywood? Well, it looks like there’s more to the story and it hits closer to home.

Emails from Gov. Hassan to a Sony executive as part of a fundraising solicitation were part of the hack and were published this week on Wikileaks.

The emails show that Hassan’s campaign in 2014 asked Sony exec Michael Lynton for a $7,000 donation to her campaign for governor and a $14,000 donation to the state Democratic Party. Lynton is a family friend of the Hassans. He is an alumnus of Phillips Exeter Academy where Hassan’s husband Tom is the outgoing principal. See a WMUR story here.

U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire was one of 10 Republicans who voted on Thursday to confirm Loretta Lynch as the nation’s new attorney general. After many weeks of wrangling and delays which provoked criticism from President Barack Obama, the appointment passed 53-46. U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, a Democrat, also voted in the affirmative. See a WMUR story here.

Hillary Clinton, the only announced Democratic candidate for president in 2016, visited the Granite State on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday she was in Keene at a furniture maker, and Tuesday she was in Concord at the New Hampshire Technical Institute.
