Russia, US agree to improve military coordination in Syria

Washington won’t map areas of Syria controlled by US-backed opposition – Russian MoD

Washington still refuses to provide Moscow with the coordinates of areas controlled by US-backed Syrian opposition, Russian Defense Ministry said, adding that Russian and US military have discussed the prevention of incidents during military operations. The conference via videolink between Russian and US military officials took place on Saturday, Defense Ministry’s spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said in a statement. According to him, earlier US side claimed that Russia targeted areas held by Syrian opposition on June 16 in southern Syria despite Washington’s earlier requests. The Russian Defense Ministry clarified that the object targeted by Russian military was located nearly 300 km from the territories claimed by US as areas controlled by the Syrian opposition which had joined the ceasefire.

The Russian Air Force “acted within agreed procedures, warning members of the US-led coalition beforehand about the chosen ground targets,” Konashenkov said. The American side “hasn’t provided coordinates of the areas occupied by opposition groups under US control,” which did not allow Moscow to adjust the actions by the Russian Air Force.

In addition, the Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly suggested to their American colleagues in recent months to make a joint map containing relevant information on the locations of existing forces in Syria. “However, there’s no significant progress in this matter,” he added. On Friday, US media burst with reports about alleged Russian attack on Syrian opposition forces in At-Tanf area. The Pentagon hurried to claim that the rebels there were party to the “cessation of hostilities” in the war-torn country. “Department officials expressed strong concerns about the attack on the coalition-supported counter-ISIL forces at the At-Tanf garrison, which included forces that are participants in the cessation of hostilities in Syria, and emphasized that those concerns would be addressed through ongoing diplomatic discussions on the cessation of hostilities,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in the statement.

The Syrian Army troops’ anti-terrorism offensives in Western Raqqa inflicted major losses on the ISIL and forced the terrorist group to pull forces back from two more key regions. The Syrian soldiers advanced significantly against the ISIL in al-Habari oilfield, which ended in the killing or wounding of several militants. In the meantime, the Syrian arm men and their popular allies, after hours of non-stop clashes with the ISIL, captured Rajm al-Sheikh region in Sothern side of al-Rasafeh, which claimed the lives of at least 30 militants and seizure of a large amount of their ammunition and military equipment.

Reports said earlier today that the Syrian fighter jets, in a large-scale anti-ISIL operation, targeted tens of ISIL positions across the town of al-Tabaqa, inflicting major casualties on the militants. The ISIL strongholds in the neighborhoods of third district, al-Qasem neighborhood, Fayez Mansour street, first district, al-Ariz street, al-Vekalat al-Monghiyeh street and al-Sina’ah streets were massively bombed by the Syrian fighter jets. Dozens of ISIL terrorists, including several ones with Uzbek nationality, were killed and many more were wounded in the air attacks.

Informed security sources disclosed that Iraqi police forces have identified and captured half a dozen ISIL terrorists in the city of Fallujah who had disguised as women.

“The Iraqi police have taken 6 ISIL terrorists who were wearing women’s clothes and trying to flee Fallujah city,” the Arabic-language media outlets quoted an unnamed security source as saying on Monday.

The Iraqi security source also said that the police forces also discovered women’s dresses in one of ISIL’s bases.

 ”They used women’s dresses and cosmetic make-ups to flee Fallujah city,” the source added.

On Sunday, a senior popular forces commander announced that the ISIL terrorists had disguised as ordinary people in Sharqat front in the Northern part of Salahuddin province as Iraqi forces were making rapid advances there.

“The ISIL terrorists have completely lost their morale and they have disguised in order not to be identified by the Iraqi security forces,” the Arabic-language Sumeria News website quoted Jabar al-Mamouri as saying.

He underlined that the ISIL commanders have lost their morale because their forces have fled the battlefields.
