Saudi Arabia’s Key Power Plant In Jizan Comes Under Yemen’s Ballistic Missile Attack
The Yemeni army fired a ballistic missile at the strategic al-Shaqiq power plant in Jizan province in the kingdom’s Southern part in reaction to Riyadh’s continued air raids on innocent civilians across Yemen. “The missile hit the target with high precision,” the Arabic-language al-Massira television quoted a military source as saying. Al-Shaqiq power plant supplies electricity of most of Saudi Arabia’s military bases. There were no immediate reports on the damages caused to the power plant, but the Yemeni missile attacks usually inflict heavy losses on the Saudi forces. Al-Shaqiq power plant generates 2,640 megawatts of electricity and it has been built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Company at a cost of $3.3 billion.
In a relevant development on Saturday, the Yemeni army and popular forces continued to inflict further losses on the Saudi-led Arab coalition troops near the border with the kingdom, killing several more soldiers and destroying their military hardware. “Several Saudi soldiers were killed in the Yemeni forces’ offensives on al-Samaneh and albeit al-Abyaz military bases in al-Khuba region,” the Arabic-language media quoted an unnamed military source in Jizan province as saying. The source also said that the Yemeni army and popular forces also inflicted heavy losses on the Saudi-led troops, and destroyed a US-made Bradly armored vehicle in al-Khuba region. “The Yemeni forces’ missiles and artillery units also targeted and pounded the gathering centers of the Saudi-backed militias in al-Khazra region and al-Taleh military bases,” he added.
In a relevant development on Friday, Yemeni army forces and allied popular fighters fired a ballistic missile at an airport inside Saudi Arabia in retaliation for the kingdom’s bombing of a funeral which killed at least nine civilians on Wednesday. A Yemeni military source said that the medium-range projectile was fired at the Abha airport in the kingdom’s Southwestern region of Asir on Wednesday evening, Al Masirah reported. The source said the missile struck its designated target precisely but there were no immediate reports on the extent of damage or possible casualties.
The attack came only hours after Saudi warplanes attacked a funeral in the Arhab district of the Western province of Sana’a, leaving at least eight women and a child dead. Ten other women were critically wounded. A medic said the death toll was likely to increase as some of the injured victims were in a critical condition. The house where the funeral was being held was completely destroyed and scores of homes nearby were damaged.
Earlier this month, Yemeni soldiers and Popular Committees fighters hit a military base in western Riyadh with a missile for the first time but the kingdom chose to keep silent about the attack.
Local sources say the Saudi war, which was launched in March 2015 in an attempt to bring back the country’s former government to power, has so far claimed the lives of at least 13,100 Yemenis. The Saudi military aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.
