The left might just regret this tactic

Donald Trump, we are told, is the cause of all incivility in the world. The elitist Bill Kristol is only one of those who despise the President. We have the Distinguished Lady from California, Maxine Waters, yelling to a crowd in a public address:

Already, you have members of your Cabinet that are being booed out of restaurants, who have protesters taking up at their house, who say, ‘No peace, no sleep. No peace, no sleep. And guess what, we’re going to win this battle because while you try and quote the Bible, Jeff Sessions and others, you really don’t know the Bible.

God is on OUR side! On the side of the children. On the side of what’s right. On the side of what’s honorable.

Really? From Representative Waters, pro-abortion Maxine Waters, rated 100% by NARAL Pro-Chouce American and Planned Parenthood, but 0% by National Right to Life Committee, that Maxine Waters, is telling conservatives that they don’t know the Bible, and that God is on the side of the very children she votes to have slaughtered in the womb?

And so, let’s stay the course. Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up and if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.

When I saw that quote from the lovely Mrs Waters, in a Twitter reference to a conservative site, I searched for better documentation. I was hoping to find it in The New York Times or The Washington Post, but somehow, some way, while The Washington Times and some conservative sites noted it, a Google search, at 8:45 AM EDT this morning, for “Let’s stay the course, let’s make sure we show up” Maxine Waters turned up exactly zero returns in four pages from the more ‘respectable’ news sources. Fortunately, one of them had the YouTube video, linked above, of Mrs Waters’ rant, which was a reliable enough source for me.

While they didn’t mention Mrs Waters’ rant specifically, the Editorial Board of The Washington Post weighed in:

Let the Trump team eat in peace

Over the weekend there was a fair bit of argument about the decision by a small restaurant in Lexington, Va., not to serve dinner to President Trump’s press secretary. It wasn’t the first time recently that strong political feelings have spilled into what used to be considered the private sphere. We understand the strength of the feelings, but we don’t think the spilling is a healthy development.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders was dining with a few other people at the Red Hen in Lexington Friday night. Several of the restaurant’s staff are gay and objected to Ms. Sanders’s defense of Mr. Trump’s discriminatory policies against transgender people. The staff also objected to the administration’s recent actions leading to the separation of thousands of children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. Respecting her staff’s wishes, the restaurant owner politely asked Ms. Sanders to leave, and Ms. Sanders politely acceded. She then tweeted about the episode, turning it into a public controversy.

This followed by a few days the very public heckling of two architects of that border policy, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, at Washington restaurants. Last month a Nebraska sociology professor was found guilty of vandalism for spraying false blood at the home of a National Rifle Association lobbyist in Alexandria.

After some words sympathizing with the policy objections of those good people who don’t like Trump Administration policies, the Editorial Board concluded:

We nonetheless would argue that Ms. Huckabee, and Ms. Nielsen and Mr. Miller, too, should be allowed to eat dinner in peace. Those who are insisting that we are in a special moment justifying incivility should think for a moment how many Americans might find their own special moment. How hard is it to imagine, for example, people who strongly believe that abortion is murder deciding that judges or other officials who protect abortion rights should not be able to live peaceably with their families?

Down that road lies a world in which only the most zealous sign up for public service. That benefits no one.

Of course, at the editorial’s web page, also linked is the Post’s purported-to-be conservative¹ columnist Jennifer Rubin’s OpEd column Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the lost art of shunning, in which she concluded:

Nevertheless, it is not altogether a bad thing to show those who think they’re exempt from personal responsibility that their actions bring scorn, exclusion and rejection. If you don’t want to provoke wrath, don’t continue to work for someone whose cruel and inhumane treatment of others rivals the internment of U.S. citizens and noncitizens of Japanese descent during World War II.

When I think of the Editorial Board’s musing about “people who strongly believe that abortion is murder” perhaps targeting judges and other officials who support abortion, I have to wonder what Miss Rubin would think were I to advocate that all of those who work at abortion clinics, “doctors,” nurses, technicians and even receptionists, should be personally shunned in their private lives, and publish their personal information to assist in that shunning?²

Yes, Donald Trump is an [insert slang term for the rectum here], but he has been an [insert slang term for the rectum here] who has been a fairly good president so far. After all of the (supposed) nice guys we’ve had as president, it seems that that slang term is pretty much what has been needed to get the job done. That he has driven the left absolutely bonkers is a good indication as to how effective he has been.

And if the left wish to try to torment those who work for President Trump as a ‘resistance’ tactic, it might just turn out that they will regret that tactic if conservatives turn it around against them.
