Trump’s Lawyers Double-Down in Response to Mueller’s Most Recent Request for an Interview

The best thing Donald Trump has going for him right now — alright, besides the economy — are his lawyers, who continue to steer him away from a showdown interview with special counsel Robert Mueller. An interview he seemingly isn’t reportedly opposed to having.

What’s in the letter in response to Mueller’s most recent proposal of conditions pursuant to an interview with the president isn’t exactly known. Trump’s attorney’s, Jay Sekulow and Rudy Giuliani, have merely reiterated their desire for the investigation into Russian “meddling” in the 2016 election to wrap-up “without further delay,” according to Politico.

For Giuliani’s part, he’s made clear publicly on multiple occasions what types of questions Mueller would have to agree to stick to if he wants an interview with the president.

“If he can demonstrate to us he’s got a couple questions on obstruction that he doesn’t have the answer to, that he really needs the answer to, and he hasn’t made up his mind that Trump is lying, we might — we might — allow that,” Giuliani said.

“It’s not so much obstruction questions” the president’s team is worried about, Giuliani said. “It’s really sucker punches.”

What special counsel in their right mind would agree to those kinds of conditions?

On the other hand, the Clinton administration taught everyone a lot. Unless the president gets forced into an interview with Mueller, his safest bet is to continue the stand-off. Because let’s be honest, Donald Trump says whatever makes him look good at the moment.

The amazing part is that even if Trump ended up lying to Mueller, there’s a good possibility he wouldn’t even realize it. He’s the George Costanza of presidents: “It’s not a lie if you believe it.”

What attorney lets a client with a compulsion to massage the truth, if not an outright lie, to talk to anyone unless they have to? Ironically enough, not former New York City mayor and prosecutor Rudy Giuliani. At least for now.

Giuliani said they a decision about a voluntary interview would get made in the next week. About Mueller, he said, “He can give us a subpoena. I don’t think he can force us to testify.”

And America waits to pop their kernels.
