Sweden: Rise of populism dominates pre-election hustings
Annie Loeoef, Leader of the Centre Party, warned against a rise of left and right-wing populism on Saturday in Stockholm, at a pre-election hustings between leaders of the major Swedish parties before Sunday’s poll. “We must fight against the populists, both the left-populists and the right-populists. This is an election about values and it is serious.
Sweden is being fundamentally challenged when the Left Party is growing, when the Swedish Democrats are growing.” she said. Ebba Busch Thor, leader of the Christian Democrats, Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Swedish Moderate Party, and Jan Bjorklund, Leader of the Liberal Party, also spoke at the event.
Immigration has been a central issue in the campaign, after Sweden accepted 163,000 refugees in 2015 – the highest intake in the EU per head of population. Opinion polls suggest that the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats will win around 20% of the vote, which would make them the second largest party in parliament.
Sweden: Prime Minister ends election campaign with rally
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Loefven attended his final pre-election rally for the Social Democratic Party in the southern city of Linkoeping on Saturday, on the eve of tomorrow’s poll. Welcomed by hundreds of voters, Loefven mingled with the crowd, shaking hands, posing for photos, handing out roses and talking to supporters.
