Yemen’s warring parties enter penultimate day of peace talks

Delegates from the Saudi-backed Yemeni government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and Iranian-supported Houthi movement convened with the UN mediating team in Rimbo on Wednesday, for the final day of the ongoing peace talks. Following progress on a major prisoner swap deal, the UN mediating team headed by the Special Envoy Martin Griffiths, is trying to pressure the parties into finding a solution on the reopening of Sana’a international airport and status of the country’s main port Hodeidah, which is thought to be crucial to tackling the raging famine and humanitarian crisis in Yemen. On Tuesday representatives of the Saudi-backed Yemeni government and the Iran-backed Houthi movement exchanged the lists for prisoner swap with a total number of names of more than 15 000 by January 20. The deal is expected to be implemented by the International Committee of the Red Cross. The UN-backed Yemen peace talks, aimed at putting an end to the country’s four year-old conflict, will continue until December 13.
