CNN: Maybe Karen Pence Shouldn’t Have Secret Service Protection If She Teaches at a Christian School

Last week a couple of stories appeared that were, in my view, important. Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, decided to take a part time job teaching art at a private Christian school in Virginia. Because the folks running the school actually believe in the Bible and God and they don’t think Jesus Christ was just some guru or social worker (quick question: how many poor people did Christ give money or housing to?) they require that their faculty, staff, students, and the parent of students, affirm their belief in the same. Part of that affirmation is an acceptance that marriage is between one man and one woman and that sex outside of that bond is improper. They also believe there are two genders and expect faculty, staff, students, and parents to behave as such.

This adherence to basic biology and orthodox Christian sexual ethics set the left ablaze with insults directed at Mrs. Pence.

The second story was Ben Sasse trolling several Democrat senators who have been treating Catholic beliefs, particularly the opposition to abortion, as a disqualification for office. Sasse authored a “sense of the Senate” resolution saying that objecting to a nominee because of membership in the Knights of Columbus was a violation of the prohibition on religious tests.

As I said in that latter post:

As shown by the hysteria over Karen Pence deciding to teach part-time at a private Christian school, we’ve literally reached the point where public adherence to orthodox Christianity is viewed as an existential threat to the national secular religion of “tolerance.” I’m not terribly sanguine about how this will play out. Not very long ago a military chaplain was threatened with court-martial because he refused to hold a marriage retreat that contained “same-sex” couples. As Archbishop Charles Chaput said:

My point is this: Evil talks about tolerance only when it’s weak. When it gains the upper hand, its vanity always requires the destruction of the good and the innocent, because the example of good and innocent lives is an ongoing witness against it. So it always has been. So it always will be. And America has no special immunity to becoming an enemy of its own founding beliefs about human freedom, human dignity, the limited power of the state, and the sovereignty of God.

Now we’ve sort of reached the logical conclusion of the objection to Pence’s teaching job. On Friday, during CNN’s “Inside Politics,” anchor John King questioned whether Karen Pence should have Secret Service protection and seemed to suggest that the Pence’s should not be allowed to use an official residence because of their rejection of sexual perversion.

Does it matter that all taxpayers pay for her housing? That all taxpayers pay for Secret Service protection?

Whether King was just trolling his panel for outrageous comments using a rhetorical device or engaging in discussion is immaterial. We have reached a place where a network host, albeit a minor host of a minor network, can offer up the notion that Mrs. Pence’s adherence to Christianity as it was understood up until Anthony Kennedy went off his meds disqualifies you from Secret Service protection or from using government quarters.
