Today’s Sunday Respite is: Autumn Equinox. Composer: Cynthia Jordan Album: Quiet Journey

The Autumnal Equinox. We celebrate Mother Earth giving up her bounty to us as she prepares to go into her slumber to rest.

The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year’s crops.

Though temperatures may still be warm during the day, summer has truly come to an end. The leaves on deciduous trees have or soon will begin to turn colors and fall to the ground, and there is a chill in the evening air.

Autumn begins in the Northern Hemisphere on Monday, Sept. 23. That’s the day of the Autumnal Equinox, one of two days when the sun is located just above the Earth’s equator and day and night are roughly equal.
