Clashes erupt as activists organise event in lands threatened with seizure

Violent clashes broke out between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces in the village of Asir al-Qibliya, south of Nablus, on Friday, during an event organised by Palestinian citizens and activists to plow land threatened with seizure.

Footage shows a Palestinian wounded in the face being transported to an ambulance, and a journalist could also be seen sitting on the ground showing signs of suffocation with tear gas.

“What happened today is that as soon as the participants reached our lands threatened with confiscation, the Israeli army hit stun grenades and tear gas, and clashes occurred between us as you can see,” Falah Yassin, a member of the village council of Asira al-Qibliya, said.

Hakima Hassan, one of the participants in the event added: “When we went to plow the land today, the Israeli army attacked us with tear gas, sound bombs and rubber bullets, and the participants from the land owners were injured. These settlers and the army will not be afraid of them or surrender to them, and we will continue to follow that because this is our legal and natural right.”

Violence has broken out frequently between the inhabitants of Asira al-Qibliya and the nearby Israeli settlement of Yitzhar, which was partly built on land confiscated from the Palestinian village.

Settlers from the area have reportedly frequently attacked villagers but they have also assaulted Israeli soldiers and border police.

The event was reportedly organised by the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, the Popular Resistance Committees, and the National Action Factions in the Nablus governorate, with the aim of protecting the lands under threat of seizure.

Hakima Hassam, landowner in Asira al-Qibliya: “Our land is at risk of being confiscated by Yitzhar settlers who are always and fiercest and most violent across all southern Nablus. They all the time attack our farmers who are working in their lands; they burn and cut the land and corps. Today, we wen went to plow the land, the Israeli Army attacked us with tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets. Two young men of the landowners were injured. We will not be afraid of them or surrender. We will continue to follow up the matter because it is our land and this is our legal and natural right.”

Falah Yassin, council member of Asira al-Qibliya village: “What happened today is that as soon as the participant arrived to our lands. The Israeli Army fired stun grenade and tear gas, followed by clashes as you can see.”
