How far away are we from COVID-21?

BATTLE FOR WORLD | November 3, 2020: A new strain of the coronavirus designated as 20A.EU1 has started to spread throughout Europe in recent months, and may begin to circulate in Russia, but so far the strain has not yet been identified, according to the Russian consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor news release on Monday (November 2) to TASS.

The University of Basel noted that Swiss and Spanish scientists uncovered that a new strain of the coronavirus 20A.EU1 has widely spread in Europe since recent months. And analysis is showing that the new strain emerged in Spain last summer – i.e. the summer that just finished in 2019. It started showing up in agricultural workers, as borders reopened, the virus began to migrate. This new strain of the virus has been detected in 12 European countries so far, as well as in the countries of Hong Kong and New Zealand.

“Up to this moment the new strain 20A.EU1 has not been identified in the examined samples of SARS-CoV-2. Given the population’s cross-border mobility and the natural processes of some strains of the virus being pushed out by others, this particular strain may become one of the varieties circulating in Russia,” the Russian watchdog news release said.

And the watchdog Rospotrebnadzor also said that research and observations so far had produced no evidence yet that the new strain was more harmful to health.
