On Wednesday evening, 1 June 2022, at around 6:00 P.M., several soldiers detained Salwa Sidr, 13, claiming she had held a knife while standing on the steps of her house. They made the allegation relying on a report by settlers, without presenting any evidence. Sidr vehemently denied the accusation, but the soldiers insisted and even tried to handcuff her. They then led her, without her parents, to a nearby street, where they continued questioning her about the knife. The soldiers only released her after she admitted she had used a knife to peel a cucumber.

One of the soldiers then went over to her parents and explained that their children were not allowed to stand near the windows of the house overlooking the Beit Hadassah settlement, nor on the steps of their building. Another routine day under Israel’s apartheid regime. In a testimony she gave B’Tselem field researcher Manal al-Ja’bari, Nisrin Sidr (33), a mother of seven children between the ages of two and 13, recounted:

On 1 June 2022, at around 6:00 P.M, I went with my children to visit a relative on the street opposite us. Two of my daughters, Salwa and Zeinab (12), went home to get some things. About 15 minutes later, they came back and told me that settlers from Beit Hadassah were throwing stones at our house. I gathered the children and walked towards our house. When I was across the road from it, on a-Shalala Street, I saw them throwing stones at passers-by.

Then two military jeeps passed by, and I saw my husband Shadi standing and talking to the soldiers. When the soldiers saw me, they ordered me to stop. Shadi told me that the soldier had told him that Salwa had been holding a knife. I asked Salwa, and she said it wasn’t true. The soldier said settlers were accusing her of holding a knife while she was standing on the steps of our building. Salwa was terrified. She was pale and said it wasn’t true. The officer threatened to handcuff her. Zeinab intervened and said they should handcuff her instead, and then the officer wanted to handcuff both of them. He started putting the handcuffs on Salwa but stopped when he saw that I was filming the incident on my phone.

The soldiers led Salwa to the nearby street, a-Shuhada Street, which is shut off with a gate. Shadi went with her but at some point, the soldiers made him stand outside the gate and closed it. Salwa was crying. I saw her behind the gate, with a soldier asking her questions. After about 15 minutes, the soldiers led her out to a-Shalala Street through the gate, and didn’t let anyone go near her. I saw one of the soldiers call someone on the phone, and then he passed it to Salwa. I heard her say she’d been holding a knife and peeling a cucumber while standing on the steps. Only then did they let her go. Then the soldier came over to us and said our children weren’t allowed to stand by the windows overlooking Beit Hadassah or on the steps.
